On 16 February 2026, the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII), Addis Ababa University, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) — through the Timbuktoo Initiative — inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence University Innovation Pod (AI UniPod) at EAII headquarters in Addis Ababa. The facility includes advanced AI workstations, high-performance computing systems, robotics equipment, design studios, and collaborative learning spaces designed to support the full innovation cycle from concept to enterprise creation.

The AI UniPod is intended to serve university students, emerging startups, and researchers, providing structured capacity-building programmes and mentorship. The Deputy Prime Minister, speaking at the launch, underscored the government’s intention to shift Ethiopia from a technology consumer to a technology creator, framing the AI UniPod as a cornerstone of the national AI ambition. The facility will be central to the country’s 5 Million Coders initiative and to training the incoming class of scholars at the planned national AI University.

This represents a concrete physical and institutional step toward building AI capacity in higher education, reinforcing dimension 1 (AI literacy infrastructure at institutional level) and dimension 14 (digital infrastructure for public institutions). While not yet a mandatory national curriculum, the UniPod anchors a government-backed ecosystem for AI skills development in Ethiopia.
