Following a successful Term 4 2025 pilot across ten schools, the Day of AI Aotearoa 2026 programme rolled out nationally on 9 March 2026. The initiative targets Years 5 to 10 and is designed to build foundational AI literacy across Aotearoa. Materials are culturally responsive, aligned to both the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and were independently evaluated by NZCER.

Students explore key ideas including data, algorithms, bias, digital wellbeing, and AI ethics through structured modules. By Term 1 2026, every school, teacher, and learner in Aotearoa has access to free, high-quality AI literacy resources. The programme represents a commitment to equitable access regardless of school resources or geographic location.

Who it affects: Students in Years 5 to 10; all schools and teachers nationally; Māori and Pacific learners with culturally specific materials.

What is notably missing: Binding curriculum mandate (voluntary participation); no teacher training requirement or certification standard; unclear enforcement or sustainability mechanism; no explicit workforce or governance AI training programme linked to school curriculum.
