New Zealand’s Ministry of Education is rolling out Day of AI Aotearoa, a national initiative designed to build AI literacy for all students in Years 5 to 10 by Term 1 2026. Adapted from the global Day of AI programme led by MIT RAISE and delivered in over 170 countries, this localised version combines classroom-ready learning materials with professional learning support for teachers. Materials are culturally responsive, aligned to both the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and explore data, algorithms, bias, digital wellbeing and AI ethics. The initiative explicitly frames AI literacy as inseparable from cultural values, equity, and tikanga; resources centre on how AI influences identity, culture and decision-making alongside technical understanding. A pilot programme across ten schools in Term 4 2025, independently evaluated by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, demonstrated high student engagement and strong teacher confidence in implementation.

Who it affects: All students in Years 5 to 10 across New Zealand schools; all teachers in participating schools gain access to professional learning and classroom resources. The programme is designed for system-wide adoption across both state and private schools.

What is notably missing: Binding policy status is unclear; while framed as a national initiative, the extent to which every school will be required to implement the curriculum (as opposed to having access to it) is not explicitly mandated. Teacher participation in professional learning appears voluntary, not required. Secondary education (Years 11-13) is not included in the initial scope. No explicit information on funding allocation or dedicated resourcing for implementation at scale.
