In September 2025, the GPE-KIX Africa 21 Hub, in partnership with UNESCO and Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of National Education and Literacy, hosted a regional workshop in Yamoussoukro to develop an AI competency framework for teachers and translate AI-related digital resources into national and local languages. The workshop convened educators and policymakers to define what teachers need to know and be able to do with AI, and to ensure that learning materials are accessible to French and local-language speakers. The Minister of Education stated that the country has put in place initiatives to ensure awareness of AI and its pedagogical applications.

Who it affects: Teachers in Côte d’Ivoire and the wider Francophone Africa region, who gain access to an AI competency framework and localised digital resources. Students benefit indirectly through better-prepared teachers.

What is notably missing: The workshop produced a framework and translated materials, not a mandatory teacher certification requirement. No government mandate links teacher AI competency to employment, promotion, or curriculum delivery. There is no confirmed funding stream for scaling the competency framework across all schools in Côte d’Ivoire, and no enforcement mechanism requiring schools to adopt it.
