Botswana and Malawi are leading the way as pilot countries in UNESCO’s Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) initiative to evaluate governments’ capacity to adopt AI technologies in education. In May 2025, these consultations gained traction as part of a broader effort to assess and strengthen AI governance capacity at the national level. This initiative is donor-funded and advisory, not binding policy implementation.
Who it affects: Government education ministries in pilot countries; UNESCO and international development organizations; indirectly, educators and students in participating countries.
What is notably missing: The readiness assessment itself is diagnostic; it does not mandate specific curriculum changes, funding allocations, or enforcement mechanisms. Implementation of findings remains voluntary and dependent on government action after assessment completion.
