Greece launched an “AI in Schools” pilot programme in late 2025, a partnership between OpenAI, the Greek Ministry of Education, the Onassis Foundation, and Endeavor Greece under the broader “OpenAI for Greece” initiative. The programme introduces ChatGPT Edu — an education-adapted version of OpenAI’s model — into 20 secondary schools selected to reflect regional and socioeconomic diversity across the country. Teacher training began in December 2025, with student participation from March 2026. The rollout follows a four-phase plan culminating in expanded classroom use by the 2026–27 academic year.

Who it affects: Secondary school students in grades 10 and 11 at 20 pilot schools, and their teachers, who receive structured professional development before student-facing use begins. The pilot is funded and led by the Onassis Foundation, with curriculum design supported by The Tipping Point in Education.

What is notably missing: The programme is a privately funded pilot confined to 20 schools; it carries no legal mandate and no pathway to binding national curriculum adoption has been announced. Teacher training is tied to the pilot only. Most Greek secondary students are not covered, and there is no public funding mechanism to scale the model, no ethics-specific standards defined in national law, and no requirement for schools outside the pilot to introduce AI literacy.
