The New Jersey Department of Education participates in the TeachAI initiative, which provides best-practice guidance for policymakers, educators, and parents on incorporating AI into K-12 curriculum. The department has published guidance materials for schools and established an AI innovation page covering responsible AI use.

Two pieces of legislation are active in 2026. Assembly Bill A.4352 / Senate Bill S.2862 would require AI instruction to be incorporated within existing computer science coursework in K-12. An earlier proposal, SB 3876, would have required school districts to incorporate AI literacy as a standalone subject covering general AI concepts, responsible use, and ethics, and directed higher education institutions to offer AI certificate and degree programmes. As of April 2026, neither bill has been enacted.

A separate policy framework study positions New Jersey as a potential national leader in AI education and workforce development, citing existing initiatives including the NJ AI Hub and state apprenticeship programmes.

Who it affects: New Jersey K-12 students and educators through pending legislation; current impact is limited to voluntary departmental guidance.

What is notably missing: No binding AI curriculum requirement is in force. The legislation is proposed, not enacted. No teacher training mandate, dedicated funding, or enforcement mechanism exists for AI literacy in New Jersey schools.
