Bavaria introduced artificial intelligence as a compulsory topic in Grade 11 Gymnasium computer science education starting in the 2023/24 school year. The curriculum covers machine learning fundamentals and requires pupils to assess opportunities and societal risks of AI, integrating an ethics component directly into the state syllabus. Introduction of the subject was prepared with a dedicated professional development course for all computer science teachers held at Bavarian universities. Alongside the compulsory element, the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs runs the AI@school programme, selecting 15 model schools to explore AI applications over five years. The curriculum change is binding for Gymnasium computer science and is backed by state-funded teacher preparation, though it does not extend AI literacy to all subjects or school types.
