From 2026, selected Danish high schools will pilot a model in which students may use all available tools, including generative AI, during the one-hour preparation window for the oral English exam. The oral presentation itself remains live and unaided, preserving assessment of spoken language competence. Written English exams retain handwritten sections to limit overreliance on digital aids and maintain independent language practice.

The pilot sits within Denmark’s broader approach to AI in education, which includes national AI recommendations for schools issued in August 2025 and a January 2026 practical guide from the Ministry of Children and Education on lawful and responsible AI use in teaching and administration. Denmark’s AI Competence Pact, launched in 2024, aims to upskill 1 million Danes by 2028 across companies, educational institutions, and public agencies.

Who it affects: Upper secondary students in pilot schools, initially in English oral exams. If successful, the model may extend to other subjects and schools.

What is notably missing: The pilot does not address how student work produced with AI assistance during preparation should be evaluated, or whether the model can apply to subjects where the distinction between preparation and assessment is less clear.
