Greece’s Ministry of Interior and Google have signed a renewed memorandum of cooperation to train public sector employees in artificial intelligence and emerging digital technologies, extending the partnership through 31 December 2026. Between 2023 and 2025, the earlier phases of the programme reached 85,772 participants, making it one of the largest civil service AI training initiatives in the EU.

The programme provides structured instruction in AI tools, data analysis, and digital service delivery for government staff. It complements the separate OpenAI for Greece initiative in schools and the national AI Hackathon run by the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Who it affects: Civil servants across Greek government ministries and agencies. The 85,772-participant figure from 2023-2025 and the extension through 2026 indicate sustained commitment to upskilling the public workforce rather than a one-off training event.

What is notably missing: No published standard or assessment defines what level of AI competence public servants must achieve. The programme is delivered through a private-sector partnership rather than an institutionalised civil service training requirement.
