Hungary has integrated artificial intelligence content into its national smart textbook platform, with 58 AI-related lessons or exercises available across subjects in the 2025-26 academic year. The smart textbook system is centrally managed by the government and distributed to all public schools, meaning the AI content reaches students nationally rather than depending on individual school or teacher decisions.

This initiative sits alongside Hungary’s Renewed AI Strategy (2025-2030), published in September 2025, which includes personal competence development programmes in education and targeted upskilling of SME leaders and staff. The government also announced plans to launch a dedicated AI Research Centre in 2026. Act LXXV of 2025, Hungary’s national implementation of the EU AI Act, entered into force on 1 December 2025.

Who it affects: All students using the national smart textbook platform in Hungarian public schools. The 58 lessons represent a content integration approach rather than a standalone AI curriculum.

What is notably missing: The AI content appears embedded into existing subjects rather than structured as a coherent AI literacy curriculum. No standalone AI or computational thinking subject has been announced at the primary or secondary level.
