policyeducationai-literacyteacher-trainingswitzerland

Summary

In cooperation with Canton Bern’s education authorities (specifically the AKVB - Office for Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary Education), BeLEARN has developed the KI-Orientierung, a comprehensive guidance resource to help teachers and education stakeholders navigate artificial intelligence in schools. The initiative provides clarity on technical, pedagogical, legal, and ethical dimensions of AI use in classrooms.

Content Areas

The KI-Orientierung addresses:

  • Technical foundations: How AI technologies work, their capabilities and limitations
  • Pedagogical applications: How to integrate AI into teaching and learning
  • Legal aspects: Regulatory compliance in the school context
  • Ethical considerations: Responsible use and values-based decision-making
  • Practical guidance: How to use AI tools like ChatGPT in classroom instruction

Foundation in Lehrplan 21

While Bern has no binding cantonal regulations for AI use in schools, Lehrplan 21 serves as the legal foundation for public school instruction and provides an important reference point for school leadership and teachers in addressing AI integration.

Maintenance and Updates

A team of experts in digitalization and education reviews and updates the KI-Orientierung two to three times per year to maintain relevance and reflect emerging best practices and technologies.

Status

Active guidance framework; supported by Ph Bern (Pädagogische Hochschule Bern). Not a binding mandate but represents official cantonal collaboration on AI literacy.
