Wales: AI Integration in Curriculum for Wales via Hwb Platform

educationcurriculumai-literacydigital-competence

Wales is integrating AI literacy across the Curriculum for Wales through the Digital Competence Framework (DCF), which is being updated to incorporate AI-related digital literacy, including critical evaluation and ethical understanding. Schools are implementing DCF requirements to teach pupils about the risks, challenges, and benefits of AI.

AI literacy is identified as fundamental across all Areas of Learning and Experience in the Curriculum for Wales, focused on building dispositions for critical thinking, evidence engagement, and creativity. The approach is partly voluntary/advisory rather than a binding mandate, with emphasis on helping learners use AI confidently, safely, and ethically.

Who it affects: Primary and secondary pupils in Wales; computing and digital literacy teachers; curriculum planners across all subject areas.

What is notably missing: Clear binding mandate for all schools; specification of assessment methods for AI literacy; timeline for mandatory implementation; detail on minimum standards for AI literacy teaching across subject areas.
