Wales: Free Access to AI Tools through Hwb Platform for Schools

policyeducationdigital-infrastructurepublic-access

All maintained schools in Wales have secure access through the Hwb platform to a range of AI services, including Microsoft Copilot Chat and Adobe Express AI, with Google Gemini also made available. This represents digital infrastructure support enabling schools and public institutions to access AI tools safely.

Hwb also provides comprehensive guidance and support materials to help schools integrate AI responsibly. The Welsh Government has enabled safe, centralized access to multiple AI tools rather than requiring schools to procure individual licenses.

Who it affects: All maintained schools in Wales; pupils and teachers; educational institutions using Hwb.

What is notably missing: Specification of which independent schools have access; details on data privacy protections for Hwb-mediated AI use; clarity on long-term funding for platform maintenance; information on how tool selections are made and updated.
