Alabama’s Department of Education is developing the state’s first AI curriculum for public schools, with teachers scheduled to receive specialised training in summer 2026 before the curriculum rolls out in the 2026-27 school year. The state has issued a customisable AI policy template for local education agencies (LEAs) to adopt and adapt, establishing a conceptual framework for AI use in schools. Alabama’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Information Technology pathway already includes AI, software engineering, and programming. Alabama A&M University was also selected as one of five US institutions to lead Amazon Web Services’ AI/ML programme. The curriculum and teacher training are state-driven but not yet enacted as binding law.
Scoring note: Dimension 1 scores 1 — an AI curriculum is in development with state backing and CTE pathway inclusion; it is not yet a binding statewide mandate (dim 2 = 0). Teacher training is planned but not mandated by law (dim 4 = 0).
