LSU Engineering is developing an “AI Essentials” dual enrollment course that will allow Louisiana high school students to earn college credits while learning how AI systems are built, how they work, and how to evaluate their use. This program is set to pilot in fall 2026, bringing applied AI education directly to high school students who would otherwise need to wait until university enrollment to access such training.

The course represents a structured effort to integrate AI literacy into secondary education pathways, making college-level AI knowledge accessible during the high school years. This model allows students to explore AI concepts with academic rigor while maintaining flexibility for districts in how they adopt the program.

The development of this curriculum by LSU’s computer science faculty ensures that course content aligns with both educational standards and practical industry knowledge about AI systems and their capabilities.

Scoring note: Dimension 1 (curriculum exists) scores 1 as this represents a developing, non-mandatory program for advanced students. It is a partial/voluntary approach to integrating AI into secondary education.
