Mount Desert Island Schools Develop Human-Centered AI Literacy Framework

Educators in Mount Desert Island schools have spent the past two years developing a human-centered framework for teaching AI ethics and responsible use. The program emphasizes using “AI as a mirror, not a master,” focusing on critical evaluation of AI systems and their impacts on society and individuals.

This collaborative effort between Mount Desert Island schools, the College of the Atlantic, and Maine DOE represents a grassroots approach to AI literacy development. The schools are implementing these frameworks directly with students, creating practical models for how ethical AI education can be embedded in K-12 instruction.

This initiative demonstrates that even without statewide mandates, Maine schools are taking proactive steps to develop AI curricula with explicit ethics components.

Scoring note: Dimension 1 (curriculum exists) scores 1 for local, voluntary program development. Dimension 3 (ethics component) scores 1 for the explicit focus on ethical use and critical evaluation of AI.
