Montana K-12 AI Guidance Document Released by Office of Public Instruction

Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction released comprehensive guidance developed in collaboration with the Montana Digital Academy and education stakeholders statewide. The guidance provides practical principles, policy alignment, and classroom strategies for schools exploring AI’s potential while maintaining focus on student privacy and local control.

The guidance establishes five core principles for AI use: Data Privacy & Security, Transparency & Accountability, Bias Awareness & Information Verification, Human Oversight & Educator Judgment, and Academic Integrity. The document includes professional learning recommendations for educators to build AI literacy, ethical awareness, and confidence in using AI tools safely and effectively.

This voluntary, statewide guidance represents Montana’s primary infrastructure for supporting K-12 AI integration, distributed freely to all schools and educators.

Scoring note: Dimension 1 (curriculum exists) scores 1 for voluntary state guidance. Dimension 13 (free/public resources) scores 1 for the free guidance document with professional learning recommendations available to all schools.
