The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) released a comprehensive K-12 AI guidance framework developed in conjunction with educators from North Dakota schools, the Department of Career and Technical Education, and state information technology agencies. The framework provides an overview of artificial intelligence in K-12 education with sections covering implementation roadmaps, AI strengths and weaknesses, grade-level considerations, and AI for accessibility.
The guidance encourages administrators to help teachers rethink plagiarism and academic integrity in the AI age, classifying student assignments into AI-resistant, AI-assisted, and AI-partnered categories. The framework includes resources for teachers to generate presentations, quizzes, and lesson plans while emphasizing how AI can improve accessibility for students with disabilities, such as speech transcription services for deaf or hard-of-hearing students.
The framework serves as a springboard for schools to develop their own AI policies and programs, emphasizing that it is guidance rather than a set of mandatory requirements.
Scoring note: Dimension 1 (partial AI literacy curriculum guidance) scores 1 for the voluntary guidance framework. Dimension 3 (ethics component) scores 1 as the framework includes sections on responsible use and academic integrity in the AI age.
