North Dakota Establishes University AI Institutes for K-12 Educator Training

The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education approved two new initiatives focused on AI education and workforce development. Valley City State University (VCSU) established a center aimed at equipping K-12 educators with skills to responsibly and effectively incorporate AI into classrooms, operating as a statewide collaboration that provides professional development programs for K-12 teachers and administrators with annual training targets of at least 50 educators per year.

North Dakota State University (NDSU) created an institute focused on integrating AI literacy across all majors and into at least 60 percent of degree programs by year three, with plans to engage K-12 schools by offering dual credit courses in AI. These initiatives represent a structured approach to teacher professional development with defined metrics and statewide coordination.

Scoring note: Dimension 4 (teacher training mandated and funded) scores 1 for the establishment of funded professional development programs through state universities with specific annual training targets and statewide coordination, though training is not yet universally mandated across all districts.
