UNICEF Tinkering with Tech program expands AI literacy in Honduras public schools with Ministry of Education partnership

UNICEF Honduras has been implementing the Tinkering with Tech and AI program in partnership with the Ministry of Education, providing students with creative problem-solving skills, digital fluency, and an AI literacy foundation. As of early 2026, over 100 educational centers across four departments have implemented Micro:bit lesson plans since 2023. The program is supported by Save the Children, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, Raspberry Pi Foundation, and strategic partner Arm.

At a partnership workshop in Helsinki on 28-29 January 2026, UNICEF and its partners announced plans to expand the program to additional countries and strengthen its focus on AI literacy. UNICEF Honduras is also working closely with the Ministry of Education to develop a National Digital Education Strategy, with Tinkering with Tech providing practical lessons for how digital tools can enhance student learning in public schools.

The program is externally funded and voluntary in nature — not a binding curriculum mandate. Honduras still lacks a standalone AI governance framework or dedicated government AI funding. The initiative represents the clearest evidence of a partially structured AI literacy program reaching public schools.

Score relevance: Partial AI literacy curriculum exists through an NGO-government partnership (dim 1 = 1); publicly available resources created via UNICEF program (dim 13 = 1, partial).
