Skills England launched the Level 4 Artificial Intelligence and Automation Practitioner apprenticeship standard (ST1512) in early 2026, with the first apprentices starting in March 2026. The apprenticeship is open to all employers regardless of sector and is funded at up to £18,000 per learner through the Apprenticeship Levy or Skills England funding. The standard covers identifying AI and automation opportunities, solving real-world workflow problems, and using AI responsibly — including data protection, bias avoidance, and regulatory compliance.
Who it affects: All UK employers wishing to upskill existing staff or hire new AI practitioners; further education and private training providers seeking to deliver the standard; employees eligible for apprenticeship funding. The Level 4 standard is distinct from the shorter free AI foundations training (AI Skills Boost) filed separately.
What is notably missing: The apprenticeship is employer-initiated and not legally required — no obligation exists for companies to enrol staff. Access depends on employer willingness to engage with the levy or Skills England co-funding. Geographic and sectoral uptake data not yet published. The standard covers tool use and responsible use but does not define a minimum ethics curriculum in the way EU-aligned frameworks might.
Relation to existing filing: The AI Skills Boost programme (free online courses, January 2026) provides free foundations training for all adults. This apprenticeship is a separate, employer-funded, more in-depth pathway for workforce upskilling. Together they constitute the UK’s dual-track AI skills strategy.
