Nepal’s cabinet approved the National Artificial Intelligence Policy 2082 (2025) on 11 August 2025, submitted by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The policy mandates the integration of AI-related subjects into the curricula of schools, universities, and other educational institutions, stating that “AI education will be incorporated into the national curriculum at various academic levels.” It sets a target to train 5,000 AI professionals within five years, establish AI excellence centres in all seven provinces, and ensure AI literacy from school level upwards. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is designated as the lead agency for implementation.

Who it affects: Students from school through university, where the policy directs curriculum integration; the broader workforce, through a five-year professional training target; and future AI governance, through plans for provincial excellence centres. The policy is a cabinet-approved instrument applying across all educational institutions in Nepal.

What is notably missing: The policy does not include dedicated funding allocations, a binding implementation timetable for curriculum changes, mandatory teacher training requirements before rollout, or enforcement mechanisms. It is a policy framework approved by cabinet rather than an enacted law, and the gap between the policy’s ambitions and Nepal’s existing digital infrastructure — particularly in rural provinces — is not addressed.
