Burundi’s government held a national validation workshop for its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (SNIA) 2026–2030 in Bujumbura on 21–22 April 2026, organised by the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Digital Economy with UNDP support. The workshop produced a validated strategic framework covering six pillars: governance, digital infrastructure, data, human capital, innovation, and sector applications.
Key education and workforce commitments in the validated SNIA include: adapting university curricula to prepare graduates for AI-related professions; training more than 1,000 public agents in AI tools and applications; encouraging AI talent development among youth and women; and piloting approximately 15 AI projects in health and agriculture sectors.
The governance pillar establishes AI steering bodies with mandates for oversight, ethical rules, and adaptation of the legal and regulatory framework to AI. Ethics and algorithmic accountability are named as explicit pillars.
Who it affects: Burundian university students (curriculum adaptation), public servants (1,000+ training target), civil society, and the general population. The Ministry of Finance, Budget and Digital Economy leads implementation.
What is notably missing: The SNIA was validated at a workshop — it is not yet enacted into law. Scores reflect strategy-level commitments rather than statutory mandates. No binding employer AI training obligations, worker rights provisions, or enforcement mechanisms have been enacted. Internet penetration remains low, limiting the reach of any digital AI literacy initiative.
