New Mexico Legislative Education Study Committee AI Working Group Issues Policy Recommendations

A working group established under New Mexico’s Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) provided comprehensive policy recommendations to state lawmakers ahead of the 30-day legislative session that began January 21, 2026. The working group’s report emphasized that AI policy should ensure equitable access to AI in all New Mexico schools across different socioeconomic backgrounds and geographic areas.

Key recommendations included establishing an oversight body at the New Mexico Public Education Department to help schools find funding opportunities and create a vetting system for safe AI tools, as well as implementing ongoing professional development for teachers on AI technology. The group also highlighted the importance of safety laws addressing concerns like student data privacy and cyberbullying risks. These recommendations formed the basis for lawmaker consideration of AI education policy in the 2026 legislative session.

Scoring note: Dimension 10 (named government body with AI governance mandate) scores 1 for the formal establishment of a working group with legislatively mandated assessment and policy recommendation authority, though implementation of recommended governance structures is pending.
