Uganda convened a national consultative workshop on 19 February 2026 in Kampala to launch the UNESCO Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) process. The workshop brought together government institutions, academia, the private sector, civil society, youth innovators, and development partners to guide how AI should be developed and governed in Uganda. Dr. Joyce Nakatumba-Nabende of Makerere University was designated Lead National Expert by UNESCO to coordinate the assessment. The process will identify institutional capacity, data system strengths and gaps, governance structures, and societal readiness for AI adoption. Separately, Uganda announced it would release a comprehensive AI and Emerging Technology Roadmap by June 2026. Neither the assessment nor the forthcoming roadmap yet establishes a named AI governance body with a legal mandate; they represent preparatory work toward formal AI governance.
