The Nigerian Federal Government, in partnership with UNESCO and with EU support, launched a three-day AI Literacy Training programme for Senior Civil Servants from 6 to 8 May 2026. The training covers AI fundamentals, ethical use of artificial intelligence, practical applications in public administration, and real-world applications of AI for improving governance and service delivery. The programme adopts a train-the-trainers approach to ensure sustainability and cascade AI knowledge across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The initiative follows an earlier Bauchi State civil service training in April 2026 and reflects a broader federal expansion. The Federal Government has also launched an AI Government Campus — in partnership with Google and Apolitical — providing structured online courses for public servants in AI fundamentals, ethics, and real-world government applications. Nigeria additionally launched Service Wise GPT, an AI-powered platform assisting public servants with navigating Public Service Rules, financial regulations, and procurement guidelines.
While these civil servant AI training programmes are significant in scope, they remain voluntary and project-based rather than a mandated minimum-standard obligation for all civil servants. Nigeria’s NITDA 3MTT programme additionally provides free AI and digital skills training to public servants. Collectively, these initiatives advance dimension 11 evidence (civil servant AI training), though without a defined compulsory standard they remain at a partial/voluntary level.
