The LXII Legislature of the Estado de México approved a reform to Article 61 of the state Education Law in late April 2026, legally mandating the Secretaría de Educación to promote responsible, ethical, and gradual use of artificial intelligence in upper-secondary and higher-education institutions. The reform establishes criteria covering academic integrity, data protection, information verification, and prevention of AI-related bias and misinformation, making it a statutory — though not yet curriculum-level — obligation. The regulation entered into force upon publication of the decree and requires the Executive to allocate human and financial resources for implementation. It is described as the first state-level law of its kind in Mexico for AI use in education.
