Under the APS AI Plan (released November 2025), foundational AI training is mandatory for all Australian Public Service (APS) staff. The first new mandatory requirement takes effect on 15 June 2026, with all remaining requirements active by December 2026.
The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) developed the AI Fundamentals training module, which agencies can use to satisfy the policy requirement. Every federal public servant must complete the foundational training building a consistent baseline of understanding of responsible AI use.
The training covers: responsible and safe AI use, understanding what AI can and cannot be used for, managing risks, and clear communication of when AI is used in government work. Chief AI Officers are appointed to lead adoption in each agency.
The GovAI platform and GovAI Chat provide secure government-managed AI tools for APS staff.
Score impact: Dim 11 raised from 0 to 1 — civil servants are mandated to receive AI training but no defined external standard or verification mechanism has been established beyond the DTA module.
